1. Loosen up! Don’t grip the racquet so tight, loosen your whole body and swing freely at the ball.

2. Think “fast” instead of “hard”. The tension of your body starts in your mind.

3. Exhale when you serve. That will help you release some of the tension.

4. Make a swooshing sound. Try a few serves without the ball and just listen to the sound. Remember the feel and hit the ball in the same way.

5. Don’t aim! When you are learning how to serve fast, you need to let go. Don’t try to serve fast and at the same time get every ball in.

Australian Open, January 23, 2011 / Fourth Round Win Over Tommy Robredo

Q. Do you recall your first visit to Australia and what impression it may have made on you?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, it was a long time ago now. I remember I had a great vacation here with my parents and my sister. We did all sort of the east coast, Sydney, up into Cairns, and also did the Great Barrier Reef. It was a wonderful time we had. People were friendly and helpful, because sometimes we didn’t know our way around. It was great.

Q. I meant as a tennis player.

ROGER FEDERER: ‘98 as a junior. Same thing. I played out in Taralgon. A little country town. Very relaxed atmosphere. Players were in a good mood, I remember that.

Obviously it was a dream come true to play on the grounds here at Melbourne Park. Same thing. To sort of rub shoulders with the big guys, it was kind of cool.

The city was fun. I don’t remember what I was doing and where I was staying actually, but it was a good time.

Q. We’re one week on the way now. You had a scare against Gilles Simon. Now you’re in the quarterfinals. Are you satisfied with the way things are going now?

ROGER FEDERER: Yes, I’m satisfied. I’m still in the tournament. I’m in another quarterfinal. Got all the chances to make it to the semis again, so I’m very pleased. It’s been a tough first week with a bit of heat the last couple of matches I played in.

Racquet customization can be as simple as changing your replacement grip to completely change the specs of your racquet!

Some players like to extend their replacement grip because of a two handed backhand, or build up their butt cap, or use a rubber band instead of a vibration dampener. Everyone is different, so it makes sense that they will like different racquets and different set ups. The playing characteristics of a racquet can be altered to fit your playing style and ability. My racquet is heavy, but not so heavy that I can’t swing it comfortably without being fatigued. I found what I like best by trying different setups and by adjusting the racquet specs to help my style of play. An experienced racquet technician can help you get the best performance out of your racquet by helping you find your ideal weight, swing weight, and balance point.

How many of you have had multiple racquets and had one that just felt better than the others? I remember when I was younger I played with a Prince CTS Lighting. I loved that racquet and over a few years ended up with four. I remember thinking that the older ones I had felt different than the newer ones. I thought at the time that they changed the specs. Now I know that the older ones could have been produced at a different factory and could have been at different ends of the range for that racquet.

For anyone that watched Ana Ivanovic at this year’s US Open, you caught one of the first glimpses of the new Yonex racquets that were later released on October 1. The initial line consisted of three racquets, all under theEZONE label, none of which were actually in her hands. Starting at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, Ivanovic began using a new frame, which was painted entirely black leading up to the US Open. The appearance of her racquet now resembles the new EZONE 100, but underneath the paint, the frame is still in its prototype stages.

Along with some renewed confidence, Ivanovic has been pleased with the new EZONE technology stating, “I really love this new racquet. It’s very powerful, and has a larger sweetspot too, that helps on off-center hits. Yonex has done a great job in developing a racquet that has helped me improve my performance . . . I liked it as soon as I tried it.” So the next question to answer is, exactly what is new in this series of Yonex frames? People that are familiar with the Yonex brand know that for the most part, they prefer to keep it simple. They tried not to radically change frames while still making improvements along the way. The EZONE line throws all of that thinking away as they have come up with a series of technologies that sync together to create the whole EZONE experience

Rafael Nadal had already broken every tennis heart around the world when he soldiered through his quarterfinal match against David Ferrer, clearly injured, clearly in pain, but refusing to do himself or his opponent the ignominy of retiring. And the Spaniard clambered even further into the public’s affections when he sat in front of the world’s tennis media to explain the reasons behind that decision.

“I had a problem during the match, in the very beginning,” said Nadal. “After that, the match was almost over. So that’s what I can say. But you know what, for me is difficult come here and speak about. In Doha I wasn’t healthy. Today I have another problem. Seems like I always have problems when I lose, and I don’t want to have this image, no? I prefer don’t talk about that today. If you can respect that, will be a very nice thing for me. Thank you.”

Refusing to make excuses for the loss, and heaping praise on friend and compatriot Ferrer, Nadal explained that in his mind the nature of tennis is that there are positive and negative moments, and today’s defeat, although devastating, was one of the many peaks and troughs that go hand in hand with being a professional tennis player

This means that we have the top three seeds in the semis, and Li who is yet to lose a match this season. Zvonareva reached her third successive Grand Slam semifinal, in straight sets, but not before Kvitova, who had upset Samantha Stosur and Flavia Pennetta earlier in the tournement, went from 0-4 to 2-4 in the first set, and more importantly, from 0-3 to 4-3 in the second. Clijsters also advanced in straight sets against Radwanska, who was playing her first tournament in three months.
